This means APE avoids hidden behaviors and requires all actions and logic to be clearly defined. The language is designed to give immediate and clear error messages, so there's no confusion. Because it's deterministic, the same input will always produce the same output, which is important for AI to work reliably. The way APE code is written is also designed to be easy for AI agents to create and understand.

APE can be used as a standalone programming language or as a bridge language to translate between different systems. It has a core language that includes a built-in interpreter, a standard library with tools for JSON, dates, math, and more. It also supports writing programs in multiple languages like English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, while still working the same way. The language includes features for checking programs, running them, and seeing how they work step by step.

APE also offers special packages to connect with AI services like Claude and OpenAI. There are also tools to help APE work with LangChain, a popular framework for building AI applications. To get started, you can install APE Language using a simple command. Then, you can create a program file to define tasks, inputs, outputs, and the steps to complete them. You can then check, compile, or run your APE program. You can also use APE directly within Python code to run tasks.

APE has a thorough set of tests to ensure it works correctly, covering many parts of the language from how it reads code to how it runs programs. The project is organized into different packages for the core language, AI integrations, and the standard library. APE is designed to be strictly deterministic, meaning it removes ambiguity. It also allows for controlled deviations when needed and is built with AI interaction in mind. It includes type safety and allows policy rules to be directly included in the language.

As of December 2025, APE is in its Prototype v1.0.6 stage, with key parts like the code reader and Python code generator working well. The main language features are ready for use, and more advanced features are being developed. The current release is v1.0.3, available since December 2024.
